This month...
Welcome to June and welcome to
the June Color Update. Perhaps there is a trend for design and food, perhaps I
always have food on my mind or it might be down to the fact I’m still recovering
from a bbq last weekend. Either way I’ve managed to round up quite a few food
related posts for you to get your teeth (or brain) stuck into. We’ve got edible
jewellery in the form of Dried fruit rings,
self-service bar snacks at MiNIBAR and a
certain Danish toy manufacturer that is going to have you salivating over a new
range coming out soon (Lego Architecture).
Also on top of Justine Fox delving into the color psychology of Lilac in the
Color of the month, there are also a couple
of really great shows in London at the moment including
Significant Colour and
Super Contemporary. Finally just before a
forward look at the Global Color Research
seminar schedule there’s some fascinating wooden textiles from
Elisa Strozyk, so scroll down for a gander.
This month the new issue of
Mix Future Interiors comes out, and along with some fantastic stories (some
of which are previewed in this Color Update) including a look at
boutique hotels, the Chelsea flower show, a
Japan market feature and an interview with Stefano
Giovannoni, Mix Future Interiors has a new name;
Mix. The magazine will still feature all the
same great editorial, color trends and design news but now the name just rolls
of the tongue.
We are also preparing for 100%
Design during the London Design Festival in September, more details of which
will follow in this newsletter. Scroll down now to see what we’ve got up our
sleeves.
Till next month…

Color of the month
Lilac / MI 18.01.06 / NCS S 1040-R60B
Every month Justine Fox, color
expert at Global Color Research, presents a color of the month, helping
you to understand how color psychology affects trends. This month she looks at
how Lilac is set to take over in the fabrics industry for SS2010.
The heady perfumed spring
flower comes in a range of colors, but the word Lilac straight away conjures up
a soft light purple your grandmother would have loved. It is said that the
flower symbolises the first flush of love; think Easter, new beginnings and
spring. Is this why it has been flagged by many fabric manufacturers as the show
color of choice for the 2010 season? Perhaps the choice of color is linked to
encouraging new growth in the economy.
Lilac has been seen at many
stands in Heimtextil Frankfurt in January as the key accent, including a
fantastic ‘crochet’ effect jacquard from Austrian Baumann Dekor. By the time
Proposte Como came around this light fresh color was seen through many
collections, with Italian company Texar Stoffe completely focused on lilac for
their complete stand, showing fabric in intricate weaves, herringbones,
houndstooth and blunt floral silhouettes.
Lilac is a light version of
purple. Purple of course was the first chemical dye produced by William Perkins
about 150 years ago (he was trying to make quinine at the time). Before this,
purple had been one of the most expensive time intensive dyes to create, hence
its regal associations.
Used in an interior application
Lilac has a similar calming and soothing affect to green and blue but with
warmth and subtle femininity that prevents the space be coming sterile. In
commercial environments it’s being used successfully in healthcare and offices
as it helps concentration while retaining youthful optimism.

The Mix trend Filigree (Mix Interior color
trend book issue 18) is all about a meeting of old and new; the rawness of
industrial archaeology and London brick with the femininity of lace. The colors,
including Lilac as seen above, echo the marriage of the drab building site hues
and the soft pastels of the boudoir.

Above, Osborne & Little have been using a deeper shade of lilac on its fabrics
for this summer.

Here some more subtle and metallic tones of lilac and purple are evident at

Staying Power
Boutique hotels continue to
lead the way in directing future trends, fuelled by travellers’ demand for both
value and the unique, predicts Sophie Davies.
Remember when design hotels
were all clean-lined, contemporary and so hip they hurt? Well, now there’s a new
mood in the air. One of imperfection, salvaged style, mix and mismatch, and
quirky cool; a rawer, more homespun and personalized feel in tune with more
honest times. Today’s global recession has validated this return to less slick,
simpler sanctuaries, where glossy surfaces and glib decor give way to texture,
tone and intimate tales. It’s why boutique hotels, by their nature smaller,
independent and more original than the corporate hospitality chains, are on the
up. Consumers want experiences when they travel, not empty style statements.

Dried fruit rings
Combining jewellery and food,
the designers two favourite passions, these silver rings are topped with actual
fruit that has been dehydrated. The ruffles and flower-like shapes emphasise the
contrast between the natural food and the precious metal (and they’re also a
healthy snack for anyone feeling peckish).

The Image Animator
Bold and playful, Stefano
Giovannoni is so effortlessly popularist it is easy to underestimate his skill.
Yet he deftly manages to create products that communicate to a broad raft of
people while maintaining an inherent integrity and purpose. He speaks to Tamsin
Kingswell.
For Stefano Giovannoni “the
idea is to create objects totally out of the industrial process, to discover a
language and expression through mass production, to see product as a method of
communication.” This ethos runs throughout his work; these are popularist
products that reflect the designer’s interest in cartoons, science fiction, cult
films and objects, all streamlined into a form of shorthand for the viewer.
Alessandro Mendini describes
Giovannoni as an animator of images, “metaphors of tools, organised according to
genera and animal, human and plant species and displaying the qualities of games
and fairy tales.” Giovannoni graduated in architecture from Florence University
in 1978, then served a period of apprenticeship in industry before returning to
Florence and setting up King Kong Production, named after his favourite film.
The focus of the design studio was on larger than life themes delivered in an
accessible way.

Material Elisa Strozyk
Having just finished her MA in
Future Textile Design at Central Saint Martins, Strozyk’s wooden textiles and
carpets create truly stunning polygonal effects. The structural qualities make
these pieces acquire an almost architectural feel as they can be manipulated
into shape.
