Welcome to our new format
newsletter. A new year should always be about new beginnings so here we present
you with our easier to use, carefully edited selection of what we feel is
important in colour.
To keep things easy to digest, we have sectioned the newsletter into three
groups; what is happening right now, what you should be keeping an eye on in the
next three months and what should be on your radar for the next two years. We
will not just cover the micro trends it is impossible to focus on in our
quarterly
Mix magazine (where you should go if you
want more in-depth analysis, plus trends one year in advance of the market), we
will also give you exclusive peeks into the insider knowledge gleamed from our
twice yearly panel meetings, which result in the production of our well
respected
Mix Trends book.
We will also keep you up to date with where the Global Color Research team will
be conducting their ever-popular seminars and letting you know which shows you
can find us at. Do let us know what you think of this new format; you can email
us
here. Happy New Year from all at Mix and
I hope that 2010 finds businesses not just surviving but flourishing.

Colour of the
Month:
Verdigris - NCS S2050-B80G
Justine Fox, colour expert at
Global Color Research™, presents colour of the month, helping you to understand
how colour psychology affects trends. This month she looks at the soft,
green-blue patina of Verdigris.
Verdigris
is the name given to the rich mineral green that forms when copper is exposed to
the elements. The colour has been used as a pigment for centuries in painting,
initially forming a bluish-green, which settles to a richer green over time. For
our purposes though we are concentrating on the initial shade of the colour,
which appears in Mix Trends’ homage to Art Deco, Opal. This colour story was
predicted in 2007 by Global Color Research™ as one of the Autumn/Winter 2009/10
stories for the forecast book Mix Trends.
The shade was certainly popular
in the Art Deco movement, where it was prized for its luminous iridescent
metallic quality. Today Verdigris is as popular as ever, seen here at the
stylish Condessa Df hotel in Mexico City (pictured). Cool and inviting at the
same time, it is also a very brave colour to use, making an instant style
statement.
From a colour theory point of
view, the combination of blue and green makes Verdigris deeply relaxing,
naturally associated with the seaside and in consequence nature. The colour
works well for areas where relaxing is key; spa and pampering areas are ideal
fits, also reception areas where you want to keep people calm; perhaps a
customer service desk or hospital.
Unlike other blue greens,
Verdigris packs something of a punch, making it strong and subtle at the same
time (in shadow it achieves an impressive depth of tone). I think the coolness
of this hue inspires a certain amount of respect and can be used at quite a high
level of design with black, white and other icy tones. The colour is also a
perfect backdrop for shiny white or to complement tones of shadowy mauve, copper
and Tiffany blue.

John Galliano for Dior’s tree at Claridge’s Hotel, London
Fitting in
perfectly with Mix’s Opal trend of mystic modernity combined with references to
Deco and a 30’s colour palette, this is Claridge’s Hotel in Mayfair’s take on
the traditional Christmas tree. The Deco interior of the hotel made it the
perfect setting for creative director of Dior John Galliano’s sinuous fairy tale
complete with slinky snow leopard, dragon flies and parrot sitting on the sparse
branches draped with foliage.

Product Pick-Up: Midas
Two years ago we predicted that one of the key trends for
Spring/Summer 2010 would be all things precious and gold. Mix Trend Midas took
the trappings of wealth and played with rich golds, coppers and marble. So did
we get it right? Well it seems so. Personal favourites of the Mix team include
cult German eyewear brand Mykita which has gone gold for 2010; a special design
by Bernhard Willhelm will feature on Jessica Parker’s nose in the new Sex & The
City film. Expect the world to follow suit. Then there’s Tom Dixon launching his
Rock table this month, made entirely from brown Indian marble and finally Simon
Hasan’s vases, which showcase just the right amount of shiny gold.

Stockholm Furniture Fair
Held
from 9-13 of February and a favourite with the Mix team, Stockholm Furniture
Fair and Northern Light Fair are the best places to get to grips with the
extraordinary creativity of the Scandinavian design industry, not least the work
of students and young designers which is effectively showcased at the event in
the Greenhouse zone. There is also a useful section of contract furniture,
lighting and textiles. This year sees Paul Smith as the guest of honour, invited
to decorate a lounge in his own inimitable style.
There
is an extensive series of events, including exclusive colour trend seminars from
Global Color Research and Mix publications, with our own Justine Fox as speaker.
On Wednesday 10th, Fox will be giving a special talk to buyers,
retailers and marketers on ‘The how and why of the colour trend’, followed on
Thursday 11th with a talk for interior designers, architects and
colourists on ‘Colour trends for the interior design sector, spring/summer
2011.’ Be sure not to miss either if you are visiting the show.

Pedal Power
For an exclusive
preview of Mix magazine, issue 18, read on...
When it comes to bikes,
eco-credentials, improved aesthetics and state of the art technological
developments are all old news. Instead the newest designs are being sold on a
pervasive life style ticket. No surprise then that Simon Jones is seeing
bicycles everywhere.
There is much to love about the
bicycle. Despite the dominance of the car there are still around one billion
worldwide, roughly twice as many as cars. “The bicycle is one of the purest
transportation modes around. Simple engineering combined with human power. The
bicycle gives freedom and independence to the rider, and (for the designer) the
appeal is to evolve something simple yet so effective,” explains Jamie Anley of
JAM, The Art of Branding, who curated the recent Bike Feature at 100% Design.

Letter From America
Mark Woodman, Global Color
Research’s expert in the USA, writes:
“Nuance is defined as ‘a subtle
distinction or variance.’ When considering the various palettes in Mix, I’m
reminded of the importance a slight change can make on the success of a project
or design. Variation is often the case in the North American Nuance palettes and
despite similar global inspirations, the nuances in the stories make the colours
correct for the market here.
After the global palettes and
trends have been discussed and created by the Mix trend panel, our North
American design and colour professionals meet to discuss what’s happening on
these shores and unearth how the global palette is best represented here.
Considering those questions puts the global palettes in context and it’s become
the quest of the regional panels to embrace the global forecasts while keeping a
tight grip on their domestic trends.
We want the world made
accessible and the colour variations help make that possible. The stories we
tell and the discoveries we make affect everyone, but in the end, it all comes
back to home. The colours may have a similar look at first glance and the
nuances may seem subtle, but they make a huge difference in the end.”
Colour nuances for North America are featured in Mix Trends colour forecast
book.

Sneak Preview: Afrika
An exclusive chance
to take a peak at the current Mix Trends book; issue 21, Autumn/winter 2011/12.
To encapsulate Sub
Sahara Africa into one visual trend is no mean feat, given that this continent
embraces a multitude of cultural, economical and political differences. And yet,
the visuals that bind this disparate world together are immediately recognisable
from Cape Town to Lagos.
Colours are rainbow bright, decorations tribally inspired and objects reflect
the blend of local culture combined with modern Western elements.

One to Watch: Jozephine Duker
Inspired by nature and ‘the
small things that are usually unnoticed’, Jozephine Duker trained at Arnhem and
the Royal College of Art, graduating last year. Since then she has been busy
with installations for Mint Shop and BLC gallery in London. We particularly like
‘In between’ (pictured), a curtain that creates an intimacy between private and
public space. Duker’s designs are right on trend too, echoing Mix’s Curve story
in issue 21 of Mix Trends.

New Build: Rotterdam Market Hall
The construction of
the new Rotterdam Market Hall, developed by Provast and designed by MVRDV, has
now begun. This project is a hybrid of public market and apartment building with
a completion date set for 2014. The total investment is €175 million with a
surface of 100,000 m2. An impressive arch of 228 apartments will create a large
hall which houses 100 market stalls, shops and restaurants, 1200 parking spaces
and an underground supermarket. The apartments will all have a balcony on the
outside and a window to the inside of the market. The 40 metre tall and wide
opening at the front and back will be covered with a flexible suspended glass
façade, allowing for maximum transparency and minimum structure.
